Behind the Interviews
Living in Beijing with a Japanese passport, I have developed fits of doubt as I grow older. How do I reconcile the two sides to my personal identity? How could I truly understand and find a sense of belonging in the cultures that I grew up in?
Before the pandemic, the world seemed small. I could spend a long weekend with my family, traveling between the two counties, visiting friends, and enjoying local cuisines. During the pandemic, we were all trapped. Suddenly, there was an insurmountable distance between the two countries that I called home. I used to believe that Japanese culture alone has impacted my way of life. But nowadays, I recognize that my identity and actions are forged by my multi-cultural background.
I began looking for my Japanese roots in Beijing. Luckily, I met many of my Japanese peers who stayed during the pandemic. Some of them chose to live here. Some of them were trapped by their circumstances. They were the minorities in this enormous city. Regardless, these minorities inspired me to tell their story. Their trust, strength, and courage in daily lives inspired me to examine my own multi-cultural roots. They believe that these trying times will pass and tomorrow will once again be a better day.
Through conducting interviews, I wanted to share their voice with the world. Their stories have inspired me, and I wish that their voice could continue to inspire others like me.
